My Sunshine Mantra

“I Make My Own Sunshine” – song by Alyssa Bonagura

I never would have realized how important this song would become to me.  My sister, Kara, played it on her ukelele and sang it to me shortly after Beckett was born and I decided that was my “motto song”.  I sing the chorus to the kids all the time and now Embry & Beckett sing it at the top of their lungs.

After my diagnosis, I realized this song was now (more than ever) perfect to be my mantra.

To me, this song means that when it’s literally raining, or the day is not going well, or life throws seemingly negative things your way…”make your own sunshine”, find the positives, and figure out a way to turn things around a bit.  All we really have control over is our attitude and reactions to things.

Lyrics:

Everything is wonderful

Everything is great

Free as a bird singing outside my window pane

Got a fresh new start

And I got lots of love to give away

It don’t matter if it’s raining

Nothing can phase me

I make my own sunshine

And if you think you can break me

Baby you’re crazy

I make my own sunshine

Hey, let’s make a rainbow

Look for the pot o’ gold

I’ll show you how to keep it nice and easy

Even if a cloud starts forming on my lovely day

There’s nothing, no nothing, that could stand in my way

It don’t matter if it’s raining

Nothing can phase me

I make my own sunshine

And if you think you can break me

Baby you’re crazy

I make my own sunshine
